Comprised of two large volcanic islands (Upolu and Savai’i) and several smaller islands with a total land area of approximately 2,935 km2, Samoa lies in the southwest Pacific with an exclusive economic zone of 120,000 km2 of ocean. The population of Samoa is 187,820 (2011 census) with approximately 76% of the population living on Upolu island. The country’s capital of Apia is a port city located on Upolu and has a population of 36,000 people. Samoa’s main source of income is from agriculture and fisheries followed by tourism and remittances from families overseas. GDP per capita is roughly USD3,000.
